Levain Bakery, the famous New York shop, has taken Larchmont by storm. We knew we had to taste their cookies after seeing the long lines during their opening day in June. And because they’re quite pricey — up to $5 per cookie — we’ll save you time deciding on a flavor by tasting, reviewing and ranking them. Here’s our guide to navigating Levain’s menu.
1. Vegan & GF Chocolate Chip
Walnut (4/10)
We want to acknowledge Levain’s attempt to create gluten-free and vegan cookies. But from a non gluten-free perspective, the chalky and grainy texture of the cookie lingered in our mouths, and the bland flavor left us unsatisfied. However, these cookies are undeniably appreciated by members of the vegan gluten-free community.
2. Chocolate Chip Walnut (5/10)
The overpowering walnut taste brought Levain’s signature flavor down several notches. While it’s important to consider the sweet aftertaste and satisfying texture that this cookie brought to the table, these factors seem of little value when you factor in the gigantic walnuts that were embedded in its dough. Although it wasn’t for us, it’s a great choice for walnut lovers.
3. Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip (7.5/10)
While the online menu described this cookie as ooey-gooey goodness, our expectations were not met. The chocolate overpowered the peanut butter. The cookie could’ve had more peanut butter and been more well-balanced, but the texture was out of this world.
4. Dark Chocolate Chip (7.5/10)
For all the chocoholics out there, this is a must-have. The texture and richness of this cookie is similar to those of a heavy chocolate cake. This is definitely a cookie to share with your friends or family as it is very rich — but it’s the perfect season to pair this cookie with a cup of milk on a colder LA day.
5. Two Chip Chocolate Chip (9/10)
In typical Levain fashion, the cookies were filled with gooey chocolate. The balance of dark and semi-sweet chocolate chips made the classic chocolate chip cookie more elegant. Levain took a basic cookie to another level, and for that, we would definitely purchase them again.
6. Caramel Coconut Chocolate Chip (10/10)
The Caramel Coconut Chocolate Chip is Levain Bakery’s best option. The crunchy, savory coconut flakes mixed perfectly with the chewy, sweet caramel. The inside was gooey and cakey, while the crunchy caramel edges were the best part of this delectable cookie.
