This year, the All-School Arts Council was inspired to create a newsletter to keep the entire school updated on arts around campus. Although events for the Visual and Performing Arts Departments, such as the All-School Dance Concert, are advertised throughout the school, students may forget the dates or other important details. The art newsletter acts as a reminder for anyone interested in attending events around campus.
Additionally, the Council highlights one artist every month, featuring an exceptional art student in every newsletter. The newsletter will also highlight hard-working artists at Marlborough who may not otherwise receive recognition.
Sophia ’27 was featured in a recent edition of the newsletter to discuss her painting “La Dolorosa.” The piece, which she began work on at the end of last year, reflects her own Latin American and European identity.
“It was a very ambitious project that ended up taking me multiple months, eventually wrapping up at the beginning of this school year,” Sophia ’27 said.
If you don’t have the time to view students’ work at Seaver Gallery, the Art Council hopes the newsletter will act as a platform for students to appreciate the impressive and driven work of their classmates.
Furthermore, the Visual Arts Department allows students to develop both skills and their confidence. Starting in middle school, students take Draw and Paint as a pass or fail class, giving them the opportunity to play with different mediums and styles. As students enter high school, the curriculum becomes more academically rigorous, while also allowing students more freedom as interest and dedication grows. Teachers focus on accommodating the needs of students to keep them engaged in the creative process.
“What we’re asking students to do is not just create the work. They’re envisioning and understanding how they want to present it,” Visual Arts Department Head Chelsea Dean said.
Dean highlights the importance of finding students’ voices when creating a piece. Students are not only creating a piece, but they are expressing ideas and developing confidence through their art.
Finally, the Council plans on recommending art-related events around Los Angeles. The newsletter will highlight affordable or free art experiences in the city. This may include gallery openings, dance performances and theater productions coming out that month. It will also include new movies and music.
“We are so lucky to live in LA, such an artistically rich city,” All-School Arts Representative Sylvie ’26 said.
