Kaelen’s Vegan Picks: Top 4 Delivery-Friendly Restaurants

Graphic by Ruby ’23

Home-cooked meals can be delicious, but after eating them for more than 4 months, I’ve definitely been craving a restaurant-made meal. However, because COVID-19 is still prevalent throughout California, going to a restaurant is not always worth the risk. Nonetheless, you can still enjoy a freshly-cooked meal delivered right to your door! With restaurants following different policies in response to the pandemic, it can be hard to tell which restaurants are open for delivery and which are not. So, here is a list of some delicious restaurants you can order from today through popular delivery apps such as Grubhub, Uber Eats, Doordash, Caviar and more!

4. Gracias Madre

Gracias Madre is a fully vegan, contemporary Mexican restaurant located in West Hollywood. It currently delivers through most popular delivery apps. This restaurant has a variety of delicious dishes ranging from a nacho cauliflower dish to incredible burritos. I absolutely love this restaurant and have been eating here long before the COVID-19 pandemic even started. However, as expected, the delivered meals are not nearly as good as those fresh in the restaurant, since not all their meals travel well. Specifically, I would avoid ordering the wet burritos and enchiladas; I learned that the hard way. Despite this, they still offer lots of other meals, such as the bowls, that are great for delivery! Another problem with ordering from Gracias Madre is the prices. The meals are quite expensive, with some costing as much as $23 before tax and delivery fees, which is something to consider when ordering in. Overall, Gracias Madre is a great place to order from on special occasions, but it is significantly more expensive than some of the other places on this list.

3. Open Sesame

With options ranging from falafels to kebabs to hummus platters, Open Sesame is a great place to order from for the whole family! As the only vegan in my family, it can be hard to find a place where everyone can find something to enjoy, which is why I love Open Sesame. I am an avid hummus-lover, and I can confidently say that Open Sesame has some of the best hummus I have ever tried. They have amazing falafels, and according to my family, their meat is good as well. The restaurant is available for delivery on Postmates, Grubhub, Doordash, and even directly through their website. Unlike Gracias Madre, their meals travel well and taste delicious even after the 30+ minute journey to my house!

2. M Café

M Café is a macrobiotic, plant based café located on Melrose. The restaurant is reminiscent of Kreation, as it has both take-out and freshly-made options; but for the purposes of this review, I’ll be focusing on their delivery options. While M Café’s delivery menu is not as extensive as their dine-in options, there are still a lot of delicious meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner that can be delivered right to your doorstep. With meals like matcha granola and macro grain bowls, M Café incorporates a lot of superfood ingredients into their meals, which can make some quite expensive. I tend to stick to more classic meals, such as the burrito bowl, which have fewer unnecessary superfoods and lower prices. Another issue with this place is that some of the meals can be quite plain and unflavorful. Despite this, there is a delicious, flavorful meal for every plain one. My recommendations include the yellow coconut curry bowl, the penne truffle vegan “bolognese,” and the curried chickpea salad. As with most other places on this list, you can order M Café on most popular delivery apps.

1. Sage Vegan Bistro

With vegan mac and cheese, buffalo cauliflower wings, pizzas and more, Sage Vegan Bistro is definitely the ideal place for some delicious comfort food. One of my favorite aspects of this restaurant is that they have an expansive menu, so everyone can find something to eat! Their meals have a range of comfort food favorites, such as mac and cheese, salads and smoothies. If you’re looking for suggestions, my personal favorite meal is the kelp noodle salad, but the mole bowl is a close second! However, as is typical with many vegan restaurants, some of the dishes can be quite pricey, especially with the delivery fee added in. But in the case of Sage, I believe it is definitely worth the price since you are getting fresh, tasty and high-quality food, whereas other restaurants often charge the same amount for boring takeout salads. It is widely available on many different delivery apps, so next time you order in a meal, I’d definitely recommend Sage!

All the restaurants on this list are delicious options to order from; however, some perform better than others for delivery. Gracias Madre can be great for a fancy meal, but it is much more expensive and less delivery-friendly than the other restaurants on this list. Open Sesame is great for ordering takeout and has food for the whole family, but it has a limited number of options for those who are vegetarian or vegan like I am. M Café is a great option for delivery as well, but it has many dishes with unnecessary superfoods that raise the price, and the meals are not as delicious compared to some of the other restaurants listed. So, Sage Vegan Bistro is my number one recommendation for its reasonable prices, large menu and the travel-friendly food. No matter which restaurant you pick, you’ll be able to enjoy quality food from the comfort of your couch.
