The term “bling ringing” refers to robbing somebody’s home, more specifically their wardrobe, because you wish to incorporate elements of their style into your own. It stems from “The Bling Ring,” also known as the Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch, a group of seven Los Angeles teens that infamously burglarized the homes of multiple high-profile celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Miranda Kerr, Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox between 2008 and 2009.
Sofia Coppola’s 2013 film interpretation of these events, “The Bling Ring,” depicts the teens tracking the locations of their favorite celebrities and subsequently rummaging through their wardrobes. Years later these robberies sparked a trend among TikTok users to list celebrities they would bling ring. Today, the #blingring has thousands of posts and more and more people are participating in the trend.
While not actually intending to rob celebrities, these posts have created discourse about some of the most fashionable internet stars whose wardrobes many would want to steal. Many of these lists include actresses, influencers, models and singers such as Lily-Rose Depp, Bella Hadid, Devon Lee Carlson, Lily Chee and Lila Moss, but I have a few of my own style icons I’d like to bring to the table. Here is my dream bling ring rotation.
Taylor Russell: Without hesitation, my first pick of celebrity wardrobes would be Canadian actress and filmmaker Taylor Russell’s. Known for her oversized trenchcoats and vintage denim, Taylor’s style embodies elevated simplicity. Her outerwear is undeniably the most appealing part of her street style — though the base layers of her outfits commonly consist of simple, bare essentials, her incognito-esque trench coats and oversized jackets, ironically, make her stand out.
She is often seen sporting leather or suede jackets paired with solid tees, dark wash jeans and black oval-framed sunglasses, which come together for a relaxed yet chic look.
Olivia Jade: Not even former Marlborough students would be safe from my bling ring spree. Olivia Jade’s eclectic and modish outfits seamlessly blend pieces pulled fresh off the runway with affordable staples, making for a diverse and fascinating personal aesthetic. Though it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what style her wardrobe aligns with, her frequent experimentation makes it all the more alluring. While her outfits frequently feature feminine pieces such as delicate linen dresses and tailored mini skirts, Olivia doesn’t shy away from masculine elements like oversized suits, jorts and trucker hats, adding variety to her well-rounded style.
Chloe Whipple: Though not widely known, model Chloe Whipple has recently cemented herself as one of my favorite style mavens. Her outfits radiate an eccentric energy through her use of bright colors, light-wash denim and bikini-top layering. In her Instagram post, Chloe is seen sporting a white tank with yellow and purple plaid mini shorts, paired with a suede brown purse and matching sunnies to top it off. But plaid isn’t the only pattern in her lookbook — stripes, polka dots, florals and gingham are all on rotation in Chloe’s wardrobe. Her use of bold colors and patterns display her mastery for capturing the “cool-girl” look, and I’ll never hesitate to look to her outfits for style (or possibly bling ring) inspiration.
