The 10th Grade revealed its class banner at the All-School Meeting Tuesday, Feb. 21. After months of collaboration, the banner committee decided on a design and constructed the banner in this annual Marlborough tradition.
Heads of the banner committee 10th Grade Arts Representative Charlotte ’19 and 10th Grade Community Outreach Representative Dorrit ’19 said the lines, “come so far, got so far to go” from their class song truly embody the meaning and message of the banner.
Both Charlotte and Dorrit described the banner as being through the perspective of a driver, looking past the dashboard of the car and through the windshield out onto a twisting road heading into the mountains.
“The design shows how we have so much road and opportunities ahead of us, and so much more time at Marlborough, but then in the future there is even more for us out in the mountains,” Charlotte said.
Dorrit agreed, emphasizing the importance of the banner throughout their time at Marlborough.
“Since the banner is something that stays around for a long time, it doesn’t necessarily just represent our time in 10th Grade, but throughout our time at Marlborough. It shows that it’s a long road to get to graduation, and there are lots of twists and turns on that road, but we’re all in it together,” Dorrit said.
10th Grade Dean and history instructor Dr. Tom Millar commented on the significance of the longest standing tradition at the school, one that goes back to the late 1800s.
“I think the banner tradition is really cool. You can walk around campus, stop and look at one of the pillars, and there is a banner from the class of 1963 or 1933 that graduated decades and decades ago. [The Class ’19] at some point, will have its 20th reunion, and the banner will always be around,” Millar said.
The 10th Grade class colors (shoreline blue, mint green and pink adobe) are featured throughout the banner, either in the sky, embroidery or borders. The committee said that they aimed to make the banner as clean and concise as possible, drawing inspiration from past class banners such as the seniors’ and juniors’.
According to Dorrit, Madison ’19 played an instrumental role in the creation of the banner, bringing her skill and expertise in sewing to the design.
In addition to the banner itself, Arabella ’19, James-Elliot ’19 and Jessie ’19 all starred in the Pokémon Go-themed banner presentation video. Alice ’19 was the head of the polo committee, designing a class polo that featured a license plate with the words “No Limits” on the back.
