Holiday Cookies Galore: How To Do It Right

The bright colors of holiday cookies spruce up the atmosphere by simply being there and also taste delicious! Photo by Caroline ’13.

Christmas Cookies 101:

It is early December and I have noticed a sickening dearth of Christmas cookies on campus/ in my mouth. I can only assume that this problem is a result of our perfectionism, and our overall inabilities to fix simple cookie-related struggles. So, for the sake of all of our stomachs and for Saint Nick himself, I have decided to cure us of our cookie scarcity by solving some of the most common Christmas cookie problems.

1) “My cookies always stick to the baking sheet! Ugh!”

Ugh indeed! But have no fear, silicon baking mats are here! Silicon baking mats are like Pam + Butter + Oil + Everything Nonstick Ever on steroids. They make it so easy for you to slip your cookies right off the sheet and into your mouth that you might want to invest in a gym membership. Or just bigger pants.

2) “The dough is too sticky to roll!”

The cause of super sticky dough could be one of three things. Either a) you didn’t let the dough chill in the fridge long enough, b) you aren’t using enough flour or c) you accidentally put a lot of glue into the batter. Assuming it’s not c, in which case you should probably start over, a and b are both easily solved by chilling longer or adding flour, respectively.

3) “The dough started cracking when I tried to roll it out!”

Oh no! You’ve overcompensated for problem two and chilled your dough too long! But it’s okay. Just let your dough sit out for a little while for the butter to get soft again, and it’ll roll as easily as a bicycle.

4) “I keep baking cookies, but then they disappear!”

…Sorry, my bad.
