After a three year break, the dance department decided to bring back the All-School Dance Concert to showcase various styles of choreography, music and costumes, including Bollywood, hip hop, lyrical and contemporary. The All-School Dance Concert will take place on Friday,  Nov. 18, and will be hosted in Caswell Hall.

The All-School Dance Concert will feature a spectrum of styles, allowing a wider range for the audience to see and the dancers to explore. Performing Arts instructors Mpambo Wina and Holly Rothschild decided to bring back the All-School Dance Concert because it allows girls to perform and choreograph without the time commitment of Dance Dimensions.

Rothschild said she is excited to feature new guest artists.

“The wonderful thing about the All-School Dance Concert is that we have more than one guest choreographer,” Rothschild said.

Two guest artists will be featured this year. The guest artists  will expose the dancers to different types of dance and music, choreograph and help students choreograph.

Sara Von Gillern is one of the two guest artists contributing to the dance concert. Von Gillern has danced for artists such as Justin Bieber and has performed at Coachella. While she has explored tap, ballet, jazz and modern dance, she also competed as a breakdancer on season three of So You Think You Can Dance and performs as a hip-hop backup dancer.

Achinta McDaniel, the second guest artist, owns her own dance studio called Blue 13 and is choreographing a Bollywood-style dance for the show.

The guest artists help guide the students and inspire ideas for choreography in the studio.

Choreographers must be aware of a number of things, such as the length of a piece, the reaction they are provoking from the audience and the general ideas expressed in the dance.

The choreography process begins early in the summer during which students begin to search for inspiration and work on a piece. Choreography is a chance to create whatever piece a student visualizes.

Alexis  ’19, a student choreographer, chose a simple and melancholy presentation.

“I want a more somber theme for my dance and for it to be eclectic. For the costuming, I want to go calm and not gaudy,” Alexis said.

The dance department is planning to continue this production annually in order to have a performance outside of the Dance Dimensions show.

“It will be an ongoing opportunity for girls in the community who are not able to take a regular dance class,”  Wina said.
