In order to focus on her family and become a full time mother, science instructor Sarah Day will not be returning for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Day’s husband recently received a job offer in Orange County, about sixty miles away from the school.  In order to support her husband, Day said she had to make a sacrifice.

“Although I love Marlborough, for any job, I would never want to commute such a distance,” Day said, “With this in mind, I had to make the hard decision to leave Marlborough.”

Without hesitation, Day said that she will miss her students the most.

“I love the girls at Marlborough,” she said, “I have a little sister, so it kind of feels like I now have a lot of little sisters here at Marlborough.”

When Bianca ’13 was a seventh grader, she enrolled in Exploring Science with Day as the instructor. Bianca said that she still recalls her days in this class.

“Our class was really close, and we called ourselves the F Period Finkies,” Bianca said. “I still talk with my former classmates, and we are all so sad to see Ms. Day leave!”

Science Department Head Jennifer Garrison-Ross recalls interviewing Day for a position at the school during the summer of 2005.

”[Day] was very enthusiastic, had great work experience, and genuinely cared about her students and their relationship to the scientific world,” Garrison-Ross said.

Before she was Department Head, Garrison-Ross taught Middle School Earth Science with Day; she said that she loved working with Day because she brought in fresh, new perspectives to the Middle School science curriculum.

“[Day] has just been a consistent and reliable colleague throughout the years,” Garrison-Ross said, “I will really miss her!”

Although she experiences sadness and nostalgia when facing this transition, Day is hopeful about her future.

“Since I am taking some time off from teaching, I will be able to spend more time with my three-year-old boy, Jackson,” Day said, “Being a good mother is my number one job!”

In all, Day said that her experience at Marlborough has indelibly changed her as a teacher and as an individual.

“I want everyone to know that my experience at Marlborough has been a happy and incredible one,” Day said, “I’ve made lifelong friends, and I will always feel a part of this special community!”
