Yang, November return

The November Learning organization will follow up educational futurist Alan November’s visit in April with a three-day curriculum seminar for faculty and staff June 2-4.

Also, cognitive neuroscientist and educational psychologist, Mary Helen Immordino-Yang held a workshop with faculty and staff May 25.

In April, November offered ideas to teachers and students about strategies to better take advantage of technology in the classroom. Stuart Posin, director of academic and administrative technology, said the seminar will help teachers come up with a plan to make some of the strategies reality in the classroom.

“I expect we will have great outcomes from the June workshops and will likely have specifics for faculty to follow at the start of the new school year,” he said.

Immordino-Yang’s visited the school earlier this year, serving with as the keynote speaker at the Honors Research mentors’ dinner and meeting with the academic advisory committee. Her research investigates how activating the emotional centers of the brain might affect student learning.

School earns LEED silver

Marlborough achieved Silver Level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for its design, construction and operation of Munger Hall.

LEED’s rating system judges new buildings based on sustainability, efficiency and design process.

The school achieved its silver rating thanks in part to its bus transportation system, storm water filtration systems and low flow toilets and sinks.

Case Study brings hundreds

Marlborough hosted about 750 guests April 19 for Case Study Night. Deans and directors of admissions from thirty-seven colleges attended the event.

Juniors and parents reviewed four mock applications in groups of about 15, each led by a college dean or director of admissions. Each group gave input as to which student from the applications should be accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. Participants later headed to Combs Gymnasium for a college fair.

Co-director of college counseling Monica DePriest said that it was an opportunity to show off the new campus facilities and help de-mystify the college admission process.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for students and parents to get a sense of what happens in admissions offices,” DePriest said.
