It’s In the Movie: Reviews of 2013

American Hustle (R)

A quick-paced caper drama cum character study, American Hustle pays homage to the sweaty, braless 70’s and the men and women who really run our cities.

Can you see it with your parents? Aside from a lot of butt-grabbing, it’s pretty much appropriate.

Are there hot gentlemen? No, unless wispy comb-overs wet your whistle.

Will the costumes blow your mind? The necklines are deeper than James Franco on pot, and the suits come in a whole range of earth tones.

Philomena (PG-13)

A slow, aching tale of an old woman and a cynical journalist who set out on an adventure to locate her 50-years-gone child and find decades of buried scandal and heartbreak.

Parents? It’s the perfect film for the family, especially one with BBC-related predilections (read: mine).

Gents? There’s not much I wouldn’t do for a British accent, but Steve Coogan is just too ancient.

Costumes? It’s the antithesis of a visual feast. Go for the characters; don’t stay for the costumes.

Her (R)

A futuristic examination of romance in the modern world, it raises questions about the self within the relationship and the limits of love.

Parents? The soundtrack will be nicely complemented by your dad’s snores.

Gents? For the ladies (or men) who like ‘staches, this is basically a trailer for your bachelorette party. Bring a bag for drool.

Costumes? The delicious color palette carries into the wardrobe, hitting a high note in Amy Adams’s masculine silhouettes.
