The 2024 Winter Art Show displayed artwork that opened Marlborough minds using various mediums. This array of photos, films, ceramics alongside other forms of visual art showcased Marlborough students’ love for art. On Nov. 18, students packed the halls of the Seaver Art Gallery to see their peers’ artwork. The gallery included a collection of pieces that represent Marlborough art students’ first semester of work.
A notable piece from the show was made by Penny Stoller ’26 entitled “Beneath the Pile.” Stoller’s piece is a drawing and collage inspired by the joy of having sisters.
“[My sisters] are constantly an inspiration for me and my work, so I used pieces from their closets to create the referenced images for my drawing,” Stoller said.
The piece took two to three weeks to create. Stoller used Stonehenge paper, colored pencils and collage materials to capture the significance of sisterhood through the work. Stoller hopes her piece will honor the evolving relationship she shares with her sisters and that they will always view her as a friend “no matter how much older we get and the challenges we face.”
Gabi Gutierrez ’27 created another memorable artwork titled “A Part of Me, as I Am a Part of You.” Her piece is a collection of photographs depicting the diversity and friendships within Marlborough. A black and white photo of two students hugging is framed by many smaller photos, exposing the similarities and differences between Marlborough students. In an interview, Gutierrez explained the emotional meaning and deeper connection behind her piece.
“The meaning behind my work was to be able to highlight the idea that sometimes we are so caught up in our individual lives and stick so closely to the people we know, we never have the opportunity to get to know and learn more about the others around us,” Gutierrez said.
This piece acknowledges the individuality of Marlborough students and expresses the importance of branching out. Gutierrez utilized the environment around her to capture raw photos of students laughing and talking.
“The most memorable part about making this piece was being able to meet, talk to and get to know new people throughout the school,” Gutierrez said. “It was also fun in the way that I was able to capture the friendships and bonds in which new and different people share with one another without even knowing or realizing it.”
