As the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIFSS) player of the year, Sophia ’26 has demonstrated exceptional athletic abilities in lacrosse. Assisting her team in last season’s championship match against Foothill High, Sophia scored eight out of the team’s collective 14 goals to secure their spot as the CIF champions.
Sophia began her lacrosse journey at the age of 8 and recently verbally committed to the admissions process at Syracuse University to further her career in lacrosse at the Division I level. The Syracuse women’s lacrosse team is led by Kayla Treanor, Sophia’s role model. Graduating from Syracuse in 2016, Treanor became an official coach at her alma mater in 2021. As a student and coach, she led the lacrosse team to an unprecedented amount of success.
Sophia is a member of the Marlborough lacrosse team as well as a club team called Mad Dog West Elite. Both teams have helped her immensely in her lacrosse journey. She described the Marlborough environment as very welcoming, making it perfect for people who are trying out the sport for the first time. Sophia also praised Marlborough’s Head Lacrosse Coach Meghan Toomey and said her approach to coaching is very engaging.
“Meghan’s coaching style has allowed me to take chances and really think outside the box,” Sophia said, “I have developed a deeper passion and love for the game under her guidance, encouragement and support.”
The lacrosse atmosphere has also been a contributing factor to the teams success. Sophia relishes all of the shared moments and bonding experiences they have had throughout her time at Marlborough.
“Hands down the bus rides to away games is one of the most memorable and enjoyable. We all let loose and laugh, sing, and most importantly bond,” Sophia said.
Additionally, Sophia is grateful for the profound impact that her parents have had on her. Their love and support has shaped her into the player she is today and has contributed to her successes both on and off the field.
“[My parents] they have always helped me throughout my lacrosse journey, always pushing me to be the best version of myself,” she said.
Sophia emphasizes the importance of relationships on the lacrosse team. Not only does her love for the sport motivate her, but also her teammates who drive her to play better. She strives to set a good example and guide newer players, and values her life-long bond with all of her teammates.
Marlee ’26, one of Sophia’s teammates, emphasizes the integral role Sophia has on the team and the inspiration she is.
“Sophia inspires me every day with her tenacity on the field and her kindness on the sidelines,” Marlee said, “ I’m super grateful to play on a team with her and watch her athletic career develop to the next level.”
