The end of each Marlborough school year brings the beginning of a new All-School Council. Right before spring break, the current 7th-11th grades voted on their top choices for all eight coveted positions in the Class of 2023 (Environmental: Ella ’23, Arts: Willa ’23, Athletics: Cassidy ’23, Communications: Sophia ’23, Community Partnerships: Jina ’23 and the Co-Wellbeing Representatives: Nicole ’23 and Riley ’23, as well as All-School Meeting Coordinator: Noah ’23 and All-School President: Athena ’23). Each of the new members brings something different to the plate, so here is what to expect from the 2022-2023 council based on some of the council members’ goals.
Athena is Marlborough’s next All-School President. She has big plans for Marlborough’s future with a clear main concern.
“Next year the priority needs to be mental health and taking real action to go deeper than just performative measures,” Athena said. “Directly engaging with the community on what our needs are and advocating for them to the administration is how we can create meaningful change.”
Athena plans to work directly with the new Co-Wellbeing Representatives, Nicole and Riley, to put the mental health of the student body first. This isn’t the only issue Athena is addressing, and she doesn’t want this council to be a “closed-door” environment.
“I also want to prioritize student body participation in government through voting and feedback,” Athena said. “Also, making myself an open resource for the community to voice their thoughts and hopefully getting you all excited about the 2022/2023 school year.”
In Athena’s eyes, the student government needs more opinions than just the eight council members who run it. Issues that need to be addressed at Marlborough will be heard, as the council will be open to any and all feedback and opinions in the upcoming year. Sophia, the new Communications Representative, feels that the council is the best group of people to help bring each grade at Marlborough together to initiate change.
“Each council member has their own unique goals and responsibilities, but we will also all come together to plan school-wide events and tackle larger problems as a group,” Sophia said.
Sophia is not the only council member who agrees with this sentiment. Community Partnerships Representative Jina also thinks that this council is built of intelligent people ready to tackle any problem thrown at them. Kang ran on a slogan that emphasized that her time in office would be focused on one thing: “YOU.” This seems to be a common theme among all the council members.
“I really want to hear the discomforts everyone has with either the school structure or our broader community,” Jina said. “ I will do anything I can to address them.”
Cassidy, the Athletics Representative, is also thrilled to work with her council to make the school a better place.
“Being on the all-school council is very exciting because I am able to have a say in all-school events and be a voice for the Marlborough community as a whole,” Cassidy said.
The All School Council for the 2022-2023 school year is ready to put in the effort to help change Marlborough for the better.
