World languages instructor Eric Reinholtz has officially added yet another title to the many jobs he has had at Marlborough: Dean of External Student Programs. As many students face the stresses that come with planning a perfectly balanced and well-scheduled summer, many are left wondering what to do and how to apply to certain programs. Now, Reinholtz is here to help. 

At the end of the 2020-2021 school year, Reinholtz and former Director of Upper School Laura Hotchkiss met to discuss how they want students to explore opportunities beyond school. 

“Doing a lot of things at Marlborough is great… but things that people do outside of school are often the most impressive,” Reinholtz said. 

Both Reinholtz and Hotchkiss thought it necessary for students to have a singular person to help explore external programs. Teachers such as Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Regina Rosi-Mitchell and Dean of Social Justice and Community Partnerships Pamela Wright, can help students find outside opportunities in their areas of teaching. However, there was no person to help students find general programs, or programs specific to areas such as art, public policy, economics, etc. Reinholtz hopes to help students explore all types of interests.  

“Your life isn’t going to end after college; it’s not the endpoint,” Reinholtz said. “Thinking beyond that; it’s a wonderful thing.” 

Reinholtz puts emphasis on making sure students understand that they should not do everything simply to add it to their resume. The point of this new position and resource for  students is to help them navigate the process of finding something to do during their summer to enrich them and help them explore their options for a career post-college. 

Overall, Reinholtz’s new position has been highly successful, as he has met with up to 45 Upper School students to discuss their summer plans. He has helped students find programs that align with their schedules and interests. 

“Dr. Reinholtz has helped me find a program relating to business that will give me a look  into the ‘college experience’ and I highly recommend other students meet with him to find the program perfect for themselves,” Petmecky ‘24 said.
