The JV tennis team’snon-league game record was one loss and three wins, and their league record was two losses and five wins. With a new coach, the team of 13 players had immense success both on and off the court.
Get to know Paolo Caolie, Marlborough’s new Junior Varsity Tennis Coach as of 2016.
CJ: What experience have you had in tennis personally, and how will this experience help you as a coach at Marlborough?
PC: As a youngster I played competitive junior tennis, and I played for a CIF league champion high school team. I also played junior college tennis. All he years of playing have given me the experience and knowledge to share with the team.
CJ: Why did you decide to start coaching tennis, specifically for high school girls?
PC: In the past I’ve coached CIF champion teams, and I wanted to bring my experience to Marlborough. I was recruited by Varsity Coach Liz Franco and fell in love with the school, staff and players.
CJ: What has been the most rewarding moment as a coach?
PC: The most rewarding thing for me is seeing the growth in the players, in terms of the girls’ understanding of setting and knocking down goals, preparing mentally for matches and mental recovery from losses. The most important thing is keeping the sport fun.
CJ: What is your coaching philosophy?
PC: Keep the game simple and be efficient.
CJ: Who has been a major influence/role model for you in terms of your coaching philosophy or tennis in general?
PC: My high school coach Tien Nguyen and the Tennis Channel, which is very informative. The channel provides information on new technique and shows current and past matches. This allows you to understand how the tennis game is evolving. In a way, the Tennis Channel has been a coach to me. It helps me learn and teach the current game.
CJ: What is one fun fact about yourself?
PC: I have 5 amazing children of my own, and I’m always joking. I like pulling pranks. For example, I’ll tell the girls that we’re going to do a full hour of conditioning when we’re really not. This is to keep the mood light and fun.
