Assistant coaches Jessica and Terrance joined Head Coach Ken this season to round out the coaching staff that hopes to lead its team to a league victory.
The girls on the team partook in the non-school-affiliated MLK Winter Tournament in January and emerged with a 7-3 record. Ken and co-captain Cami said the team’s batting was strong at the tournament. Cami added that the girls learned valuable lessons about mental toughness and perseverance.
“We learned how to come together as a team when the games are a little hard or we aren’t making plays,” she said.
Both Ken and Cami commented on the youth of the team but expressed confidence in the ability of the group. The team is made up of three seniors, five sophomores and six freshmen. Ken specifically noted the youth of this year’s pitchers—Cami, Samantha and Jordan. Though Marlborough’s pitchers are usually seniors, Jessica will serve as a specialized pitching coach to help the young talents maximize their potentials.
Jessica has years of experience, including four years of college play in Texas. She is the pitching coach for the Marlborough team and said that one of her goals is to help her pitchers understand the crucial role they play on the team. Although this is Terrance’s first time coaching softball, he has years of athletic experience ranging from high school football to professional golf. He said that part of his vision is to help the players develop a winning mentality and stay competitive. Ken noted the “enthusiasm and freshness” that new faces can bring to a team.
“I think that [the assistant coaches in their first year are] going to grow with the girls over the course of the season, so I’m excited about that,” he said.
