This year, Marlborough hosted a new end-of-year event called “Summer Stang.” Aimed at current 9th to 11th graders, the idea was initiated by Marlborough’s Parents’ Association in hopes of fostering connections between students from Marlborough and neighboring schools around Los Angeles. The event, which took place May 23 on Booth Field, featured friendly, mixed school competitions and games, as well as entertainment such as bouncy houses, treats like Dippin’ Dots and lounge areas.
Although this is a new event, more interaction between Marlborough students and students from other schools has been an ongoing goal within Marlborough’s parental community for over a year.
“We’ve been looking at different ways we could invite students of other schools or invite Marlborough students to things at other schools,” Dean of Students Kendall Beeman said.
While some schools have been more responsive than others when asked to interact with Marlborough in community events such as football games and dances, Loyola, Windward, Harvard Westlake and Palisades Charter High School confirmed their participation in Summer Stang immediately. Much like Marlborough’s past school dances, students were encouraged to invite their own guests from other schools. According to Beeman, Summer Stang was more of an open-ended social activity designed for students to connect with each other.
“We’ve noticed people don’t often bring others to school dances because it’s awkward to babysit them,” Beeman said. “So this is a way to invite other kids without having them be your responsibility.”
In addition to the Parents’ Association, Marlborough’s new All-School Council (ASC) played a significant role in facilitating Summer Stang to maximize the amount of student-led planning involved. They organized the entertainment and games, such as three-legged races, and generated student excitement and engagement by spreading the word through posters, the ASC Instagram account and in-person announcements.
“We want to make people really excited … but it’s hard to predict how excited people will be because this is the first time this event has happened,” said 2025-26 All-School President Rainey ’26 prior to Summer Stang taking place.
