It’s that time of the year! Winter Break is the beacon of hope for every Marlborough student currently cramming for their tests. And while it is true that students are buzzing, waiting for the semester to end, they aren’t the only ones eager for this time to arrive. As soon as Dec. 21 rolls around, teachers, staff and faculty are shopping for the holidays, packing their suitcases and catching flights.
The typical winter break entails shopping and sleeping in, and Mathematics Instructor Deepender Singh is ready to do all that and more. He plans to go to San Francisco, San Pablo and other places in the Bay Area to attend his cousin’s wedding.
He explains that in an Indian wedding, there are four main events that guests typically attend. A henna night before the wedding, where attendees are able to socialize with family and friends, eat food, enjoy music and get their hands painted. Then an extended family dinner, followed by the main event; the wedding, which is held at a temple. And finally a reception where guests say their goodbyes and enjoy each other’s company before parting.
“It’s a lot of music, dance and food,” Singh said. “Everybody likes to just relax.”
Other than catching up with his extended family whom he has not seen in a while, Singh looks forward to meeting the groom for the first time. He says it is often easier to meet people during the break, because everyone has the time to get away.
The holidays are when family and friends come together, and Computer Science Teacher Darren Kessner plans to travel outside of the country to Costa Rica with his wife, her brother and his family.
He will be staying there for ten days over the break to see where his wife attended a study abroad program in environmental law in Costa Rica. She has always been wanting him to see where she studied and now that their kids have graduated, they are able to travel together more.
Unlike the tropical setting Kessner plans to visit, Head of Upper School Regina Rosi Mitchell is eager to explore Germany’s wintery paradise. She plans to go with her family and pack as much holiday vibes as she can during her two weeks off. Rosi Mitchell explains that she loves all things related to the winter holidays, so she is excited to visit as many holiday markets as possible while she’s there.
“Germany is home to some of the oldest and most famous holiday markets in the world, so it’s been on my bucket list for years,” Rosi Mitchell said.
Additionally, she and her husband have always been interested in World War II history, so she can’t wait to go to the museums and historical landmarks that Germany has to offer.
While every teacher, faculty member and staff member love spending time at Marlborough just as much as the students, everybody needs some time off. The holidays present a perfect time where family and friends come together to spread love and enjoy the winter weather, it’s a time that all people can look forward to.
