One of this spring’s most unlikely trends spotted on the runways of many major brands, such as Celine and Givenchy, is the resurgence of Birkenstocks. They were the most purchased shoes of summer 2014, and it looks like the trend is here to stay. Though they are often associated with hippies and camp counselors, when styled correctly the “ugly-pretty” shoes can make an outfit.
Many people are drawn to Birkenstocks because they provide both style and support. “You definitely need to think about what you wear with them more so than other shoes, but [Birkenstocks] are very cute and comfortable,” Lily ’17 said. Lily owns Birkenstocks, which she wears on a regular basis. “I own two pairs, and I really like them because they’re very comfortable,” Sophie added.
However, not everyone is a fan of the trend. “I think that they’re not super attractive and that many people just wear them because they are trendy, even though they’re a pretty basic shape,” Lila ’17 said.
In order to get away from the shoe’s somewhat boring reputation, many brands have come out with more fashionable twists on the classic footwear, such as jeweled or metallic versions, and Celine’s fur-lined versions, dubbed “Furkenstocks.” by many fashion bloggers.
